The main purpose of this question is not to make it difficult for you or to deliberately knock you out of the interview. The meaning of this question is simply that the employer wants to find out which of your weaknesses hinders you the most in your job as well as the process of adapting to the culture and work in the company. An interesting interview is how you solve a difficult question. Now is the time to show your honesty, but remember that only to a certain extent. In order to overcome this question, you should divide your answer into two parts: Confession about weaknesses and how to manage them.
- Use the answer to the strengths but disguised as a weakness.
- Provide a weakness not related to the position of the application
How to use your strength to overcome your weaknesses?
Option 1 – Use strong points to disguise weak points
Here are a few examples of how to answer the question “What is your weakness?” By using disguised strengths. For many employers, this method can make a good impression when showing that even if you have weaknesses, that is your strength.
* Example 2: My weakness is to please everyone
That sentence also means this weakness actually meant I was a sociable person.
(Confession): “I feel that helping people at work is very important. In the past, I used to work overtime to help my colleagues. Because I do not want to see them complain. But after helping people, I realized that they came back and asked me to help even the simplest things and it affected my performance. “
(How to fix): “I do not want to say that I will not help people anymore. However, I have learned to be more assertive, to decide if that is really important and whether it affects my work. If I do not have important things to do, when people need me, I will always be willing to help. “
Option 2: Give unrelated weaknesses
You will probably prefer to use harmless weak strategies. Some employers may view how you overcome these weaknesses as a strength and that is how to impress employers with safety.
Again, I will use the two main rules one (1) as the confession, and two (2) as the fixes in the examples of the methodology for unrelated weaknesses below:
(Confession): “I had a hard time disconnecting from technology. I always carry my smartphone and laptop whenever I go anywhere. So, I had to keep checking my work email even during office hours and on weekends. “
(How to fix): “I promised myself that I would limit the use of technology after hours, and pay more attention to the reality of life. That made my family, my friends, and what was going on around me separated from the technology which is easy for me to discover and connect with the real world. Now, I even read a book printed on paper instead of using the phone as before “
It can be seen that with any weaknesses you can find a small advantage there. Thus, do not worry too much about the question “What is your weakness” when you apply for a job interview.
